Dedicated to the memory of Ron

Ron died on Monday 9th January with Joan by his side.

Ron was born in South Merstham in 1933 and was the eldest of 4 children of Arthur & Dorothy (nee Weaver). He attended Reigate Priory school.

In about 1951 whilst a Corporal with 135 Squadron of the Redhill & Reigate Air Training Corp he competed in a national rifle contest at Bisley. Over 100 teams took part and whilst Ron didn't win an award his aggregate score was 2nd highest overall. Around this time he also achieved the Royal Life Saving Society award, a marker perhaps of his destiny of working in the 'life saving' service.

Dad first met Joan on a coach trip to watch speedway at Wimbledon. At this time he was working as an apprentice fitter at Fullers Earth in Redhill where his father Arthur and grandfather Harry also worked.

Ron signed up for his national service with the RAF and completed 5 years service which he completed in 1955. Joan and Ron were engaged but had to wait until Joan was 21 before they could marry. After leaving the RAF Ron worked in the Fire Brigade workshops as a mechanic before being persuaded to join Surrey Fire Brigade in 1959.

He worked for over 25 years for the Surrey Fire Brigade and when he retired in 1985 was Welfare Officer at Reigate helping organise leisure facilities at Surrey's stations.

Ron & Joan's 2 sons have provided them with 5 grandchildren & their grandchildren have gone on to provide them 4 great grandchildren. He is much loved and will always be remembered by his family.
